Empathy - 30 Days of Wellness

Good Morning Sweet Sister, this post is a little different than I would normally write and its for good reason. Our country is suffering from a lack of compassion and empathy. We judge before we even know the facts about a situation or verify what we were told is true.

A dear friend of mine that I met a year ago online reached out to me a few months ago wanting my help with a situation she was facing with her husband.

The details of what she shared broke my heart for her and her family. I knew the situation was dire, but didn't realize how quickly it was going to escalate. Over the last few months, I've been praying faithfully for her and checking in to see that she is OK, safe, and handling what has been forced upon her.

Sadly, her responses confirmed my deep concern for her and her children.

And then two weeks ago, she posted this and with her permission I'm sharing it with you.

"𝗘𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗬

Lately, things have been REALLY hard for my family.

Many of you have seen things on social media that don’t reflect the truth about me, my marriage, or my family.

If you’ve been watching from the outside, it might be easy to form an opinion, to judge, or even to pick sides.

But I want to share something that matters more than gossip or anger: 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆

My husband is struggling deeply with his mental health right now.  If you know him, you know that what’s happening 𝗜𝗦𝗡'𝗧 𝗛𝗜𝗠.

The things he’s saying, the way he’s acting—it’s not the man I married... it's not the father my kids love... and it's not the kind and hardworking person he has always been.

This is 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀...

...and mental illness is CRUEL.

It warps reality and twists perceptions.

And it doesn’t just affect the person suffering— 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺.

I won’t stop loving my husband.

I won’t stop believing in the man I know he truly is.

That doesn’t mean I excuse his actions, and it doesn’t mean I don’t need to set very firm boundaries.

But it DOES mean that I refuse to reduce him to the worst moments of his illness.

For those who see what’s happening and feel the urge to judge—to call names, to shame, to mock—I ask you to pause.

Because...

𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵.

Please recognize that my children still love their dad... And that we are a family walking through trauma, not a spectacle to be dissected online.

If you want to help, 𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀!

Do it with 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴.

And do it with 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥!

We need strength, not cruelty.

We need hope, not division.

Because when we choose empathy, we choose to see the whole person—not just the brokenness."

I'm blessed and humbled to know the details of the emotions and reasons behind what she wrote. May her words inspire you to walk gently with others and leave the judging to Jesus.

Look for my post about emotions on March 31st.
